STATUS QUO

In the intercultural workshop “Signs Go Global” our team consisted of Greek students from the University of West Attika and German students from the Ulm University of Applied Sciences. We had to choose a collective identity such as an activist group, a fantasy group, or a communications agency.

IDEA

We wanted to use and combine as many types of artwork from Exarchia as possible. So we decided that we wanted to bring different Street Art motifs and styles together using our storyline. It was important for us to turn our ideas into an animation that has complex illustrations and the personalized spirit of Athens using original pictures which were taken in Exarchia. By the use of the keywords sophisticated, modern and energetic, we wanted to find similarities and symbols of the different artworks.

MESSAGE

We want our target group to realize that the artwork in Exarchia is special and that it needs to be preserved. Everybody should realize that it is art that is not meant to be permanent but which changes continuously. Also we consider the Street Art in Exarchia as something that a visitor not only enjoys seeing, but that they take part of it with them. In addition, this often affects the perception and feeling of life of the residents and the visitors. So it influences everyone seeing it and they go home filled with emotions and ideas. Our main goal is making people realize what great potential there is in this neighborhood. And that everyone who was there, takes a part of Exarchia within them and absorbs the vibrations in their bodies.

CONCEPT

The concept is based on the Street Art in Exarchia, Athens. Street Art is a visual art created in public locations, which usually shows unsanctioned artwork outside of the context of traditional art venues. Common forms include spray paint graffiti, stencil art, wheatpasted poster art, sticker art, street installations, and sculpture. So we wanted to demonstrate an open-minded Athens, which embodies the residents and leaves a lasting impression on tourists. That is why we decided to be a communications agency based in Exarchia.
