Using Hands as a Sign

Idea

Our first thought about the topic was that there have to be many differences and also many similarities in our two cultures. Based on our trips to Geneng village, Java pop shops, and some other places in Indonesia, we developed our first idea about emojis and facial expressions. But in the end, we realized that a smile simply means a smile, and that there is no other meaning. So after discarding our first idea, we discovered many other differences and gestures in showing respect to each other. After many other topics in our discussion all about gestures and their meanings, we observed that in counting, we both use our hands but we do it in a different ways. So this was for us the most interesting thing and we also noticed that there are also different meanings in some hand gestures.

Concept

Our animation starts with our main topic, a hand moving and showing our first sign. Following the hand, it comes to a German girl traveling in Indonesia. Arriving in Indonesia, our German girl meets an Indonesian guy, who shows respect with the same hand gesture she soon uses as well. After that we come to a different hand gesture, the ways that they each point at things. Based on that sign, the animation starts with counting from one to ten. In the end, after the counting, the solution again is the couple doing a high-five.

Message

It is a fact that everyone uses hand gestures in their daily lives. Sometimes the same gestures have different meanings in the other counties. To differentiate the hands, they wear bracelets in their national colors. We did not change the skin tone for racial differences. By using a man and a woman, we show that there is equality between both genders. The clothes are associated with their nations: a typical German dress and an Indonesian batik cloth.
